Kieran found the school environment a challenge after a difficult childhood growing up in an area of significant deprivation. After years of not having any direction, Kieran discovered Parkour and an outlet for his interest through Fyrish Gymnastics Club. Qualifying as a gymnastics coach through a fast track scheme, he has since grown the gymnastics programme at Fyrish delivering his own version of 'street gym' to like minded young people, many of whom don't attend school regularly. With support from the Michael Johnson Young Leader course Kieran would like to develop the street gym programme in Alness, taking it into both primary and secondary schools. He would also like to develop a programme for other clubs around Scotland to deliver street gym as a tool for engaging young people who are participating in risky behaviour.
Life is often compared to a marathon, but I think it is more like being a sprinter; long stretches of hard work punctuated by brief moments in which we are given the opportunity to perform at our best.
